Cross-institutional Studies

The present degree and exchange students of the University of Tampere (UTA) can apply for studies at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) and Tampere University of Technology (TUT).

The present degree students of Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) or Tampere University of Technology (TUT) can - in turn - apply for studies at the University of Tampere (UTA).

For degree students, the studies offered at each higher education institution are available for viewing in the cross-institutional study service.

For exchange students, the studies offered at each higher education institution are available for viewing in the JOOPAS Service

Below are more detailed instructions for cross-institutional studies both from the perspective of

a) exchange students

b) UTA’s own students and

b) those of TAMK and TUT.

Exchange Students

You should check beforehand that studies taken in these institutions will be approved by your home university. TUT and TAMK are both Erasmus eligible. Please note that Unipoli studies will not show on your UTA transcript. Instead, you will get a separate transcript from each institution upon request.

The maximum amount of cross institutional studies is limited to 40% of the exchange studies per semester, and to 10-12 credits for degree students per semester.

For up-to-date Unipoli instructions on how to apply, please see Unipoli studies and instructions for applying to the courses.

Students of the University of Tampere (UTA)

International degree students will primarily use the Unipoli Studies service. Some studies taught in English may also be included in the cross-institutional study offerings available to all degree students, and in this case, international degree students are also welcome to use the electronic cross-institutional study service. NB! Exchange students apply for these studies through the Unipoli Studies service.

Study planning

As a degree student at the University of Tampere, you are often quite free to choose optional studies for your degree. Tampere3 studies improve your chances of selecting versatile optional studies for your degree.

Note! Before applying for Tampere3 studies, check the instructions of your own faculty regarding study planning and the contents of optional studies. Explore the study offerings of the Tampere3 higher education institutions in the cross-institutional study service. You can also use the service to apply for the right to study for your desired studies at Tampere University of Applied Sciences and/or Tampere University of Technology.

How to apply

In order to complete studies at Tampere University of Applied Studies or Tampere University of Technology, you must apply for the right to study for the courses you wish to take. Make sure to apply for the right to study well in advance so that you have enough time to also activate the user account of the target institution and to sign up for the studies according to the schedules of each individual HEI. To apply, go to the cross-institutional study service, pick your desired courses in your study basket and confirm your application for the right to study. After confirming, it is important to follow the instructions provided by the other higher education institution.

Please note that you do not need to apply for the right to study through the cross-institutional study service if your own degree entitles you to the concerned courses at another HEI. These instructions apply to, for example, students studying towards a degree programme in biotechnology and students with a study right in Human-Technology Interaction who are entitled to complete a part of their studies at Tampere University of Technology. If you feel unsure about the rights to study gained at other HEIs through your own degree programme, check with your own faculty.

Signing up for studies and notification of approved sign-up (at the target HEI)

Once you have been granted the right to study for courses at Tampere University of Applied Sciences and/or Tampere University of Technology, you must activate your user account at the HEI in question and sign up for courses as instructed. Bear in mind that the sign-up schedules may vary between the institutions. Follow the schedules and make sure to sign up in time.

Course completion

If your sign-up is approved, you can complete the concerned courses according to the instructions provided by the teacher. If you do not intend to complete the studies despite your signing up, notify the responsible teacher. Remember to follow up on your email at the target HEI or forward the incoming mail to another account you read on a daily basis. Email is a channel for important information on course completion.

The right to study granted through the cross-institutional study service only entitles you to take studies you select in the service.  The right to study granted to you will remain valid until the end of the concerned academic year (31 July). If you do not complete the studies before the end of the academic year but you still wish to carry them through, you must reapply for the right to study for the following academic year.

After course completion

Once you have completed studies at another Tampere3 institution, information on the study attainment is automatically transferred to the University of Tampere. Check your study register to make sure that the study attainments gained through cross-institutional studies have been entered in the register. After this, you must also ensure that the credits are transferred to your degree at your own faculty. See further information on credit transfer.

Before applying, check the instructions of your home institution and ensure that the studies are suited for your own degree! Also note that courses may be offered several times during an academic term. It is possible that only a part of the implementation rounds is available for cross-institutional students. Furthermore, not all courses are necessarily arranged every year. For the implementation schedules and other information on each course, see the course information in section "Teaching" found in the curricula guide.

Make sure to apply for the right to study well in advance, as you will have a few additional steps to complete before starting the studies: activation of your UTA Basic user account and signing up for the courses according to the schedules for each implementation.

However, if the amount of students must be limited, degree students of the University of Tampere will be given preference. Otherwise students for the course are selected according to the priority principles applied at each faculty. The general principles of student selection criteria are stipulated in University of Tampere’s Regulations on Degrees, Section 23.
