The process of filling top management positions continues at the new Tampere University with the appointment of Deans to lead the seven faculties. The Transitional Board appointed Deans to lead four of the faculties on Thursday, 6 September. The remaining three Deans will be appointed later on.
Upon proposal by President Mari Walls, the Transitional Board appointed DTech Jyrki Vuorinen as Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communications, DTech Matti Sommarberg as Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics, PhD Päivi Pahta as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture, and MD Tapio Visakorpi as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The Deans will take up their new roles on 1 January 2019.
Altogether 108 applications were received for the seven deanships, with eight of the candidates being women and 20 men. The Deans of the Faculty of Built Environment, the Faculty of Technology and Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences will be appointed later this autumn.
PhD Mari Walls assumed her responsibilities as President of Tampere University on 13 August 2018. Last week, the Transitional Board appointed a provost and two vice presidents for the new university. Provost Jarmo Takala, DTech; Vice President for Research Juha Teperi, MD; and Vice President for Education Marja Sutela, DAdmin, will take up their new appointments in autumn 2018. The process of appointing the vice president who oversees the new university’s innovation activities, public and community relations and international networks is still underway.

Dean, Faculty of Education and Culture
Doctor of Philosophy Päivi Pahta has served as Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the current University of Tampere since 2017 and as Director of the School of Languages, Translation and Literary Studies in 2016. She is a Professor of English Philology.
Dean, Faculty of Management and Economics
Doctor of Science in Technology, Master of Science in Economics Matti Sommarberg has served as Industry Professor at Tampere University of Technology since 2017. Sommerberg has held a succession of high-profile positions at Cargotec in Finland and abroad between 1985 and 2017.
Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology.
Doctor of Medicine Tapio Visakorpi has served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences at the current University of Tampere since 2017. He is a Professor of Medical Technology and Biotechnology (Cancer Genetics).
Dean, Faculty of Information Technology and Communications
Doctor of Science in Technology Jyrki Vuorinen has served as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences since 2017 and as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences in 2014–2016. He is a Professor of Plastics Technology.
