Publication of results and the rectification procedure
The admission criteria of each degree programme includes information on the dates of the publication of the results of the student selection, as well as instructions for the rectification process. All applicants will be informed of the results of the student selection process.
Joint university application
In the electronic joint university application system, the results of student admission will be posted on the Studyinfo portal at different times for the various degree programmes. Applicants can check the status of their degree programmes on the My Studyinfo service of the Studyinfo system. As an applicant will only be offered a study place in the degree programme for which the applicant has given highest priority and for which the applicant has surpassed the minimum score, the results will not be final before the results of all degree programmes have been posted on the system or the applicant has been admitted to the degree programme they have marked as their first priority.
The results of all the degree programmes will be posted on the Studyinfo system by 28 June 2018 at the latest, after which you will receive an e-mail message that will provide you with access to the admission results letter. The electronic result letter will indicate your student admission results for all the degree programmes included in your application, and the minimum required score of each programme. The successful candidates will be sent a new student’s information package by post in July.
The My Studyinfo service, studyinfo.fi, includes information on the applicant’s waiting list places. An applicant can be placed on a waiting list if his/her entrance examination or a part thereof has not been failed. Some degree programmes may have restrictions on the number of applicants placed on the waiting list. Most degree programmes leading to a higher university degree (Master’s programmes) do not keep a waiting list. You can also check your waiting list status from the Admission Services of the University of Tampere, tel. +358 (0)50 318 7387 firstname.lastname@example.org. once the admission results have been published.
Please note that if you have been accepted to one of the degree programmes you have applied for, you can only be placed on a waiting list of degree programmes that you have given higher priority in your application. The waiting list placements will be cancelled after a confirmed acceptance of all study places in the degree programme. In the Studyinfo service, assigning admission placings will end on 31 July 2018, and this will also mean the completion of study admission, and cancellation of all waiting lists.

Students will be selected on the basis of the application documents - there is no entrance examination in English-language Master's degree programmes at the University of Tampere.
All applications will be preprocessed by University Admissions Finland (UAF). Before UAF sends the applications to UTA for the selection process they will
- check that your application has arrived within the given deadline
- verify your language skills and check if you are eligible to apply for the programme
- check that all of your required educational documents have arrived and then verify your credentials.
UAF will send you a notification by e-mail when they have processed your application documents. UAF then sends your application to the University of Tampere for academic assessment.
At UTA the decisions on acceptance of students are made by the faculty organising the Master's degree programme. The number of accepted students is decided yearly by the Faculty Council.
Student selection is based on the assessment of your
- success in your previous studies
- motivation to study in the programme, and
- language skills.
Previous work experience and other merits may also be taken into account in the selection of students. Programmes may also use phone, Skype or video interviews in the selection process. For more information, please see the admission criteria of each programme.
Applicants who do not meet the general eligibility and programme specific admission criteria will not be selected. Even if you meet all the admission criteria, this does not guarantee your admission to the programme. The competition for a study place at the University of Tampere is high as the number of eligible applicants annually exceeds the number of students that can be accepted.
All applicants are treated equally on the basis of their qualifications and merits in relation to the programme of study applied to.
Publication of admissions results
In the 2018 admission, admission results are published by 29 March 2018. All applicants will be informed of the result by e-mail. If you are selected into a programme, you will need to confirm the acceptance of the study place by the date given in the letter of acceptance.
Acceptance of a study place
New students who do not confirm their study place and register at the University by the deadline will lose their right to study.
The University of Tampere reserves the right to cancel the start of the programme if there are not enough eligible candidates or if not enough admitted students accept the study place in the programme.
If you have been accepted to more than one degree programme in Finland, it is important that you read the section below on One study place regulation.
One study place regulation
What this means is that if you have been admitted to more than one degree programme in any Finnish university starting in the autumn semester 2018, you can only accept one of the offered places. However, accepting another study place in a degree programme beginning in a different semester is possible.
Please note that the admission results of some other application periods in Finland, such as the joint application period (Korkeakoulujen yhteishaku) are published only after the deadline for accepting a study place in the University of Tampere international admissions has expired. Therefore, if you have been accepted to an international Master’s degree programme at the University of Tampere but are also waiting for results from other admissions in Finland, you will have to decide whether you accept your place in a Master's degree programme given in English or discard it in favour of waiting for other results.
In the University of Tampere international admissions you will only be offered one study place per admission round. You can apply to more than one Master's degree programme, but you will be asked to put them in order of preference in the application form. You will be offered a study place in the Master's degree programme given in English that is highest in your order of preference.
Postponing the start of studying
This is an unofficial translation. In the event of any discrepancies between the Finnish and English versions, the original Finnish version shall prevail.
An admitted new student must have a lawful reason for registering as absent in the first year of study.
Postponing the start of studying until the following academic year because of a reason decreed by the University does not affect the time by which the student should accept the study place offered to him/her. Please make sure you notify the University about accepting your study place by the given deadline even if you apply to register as absent in the first year.
The right to be absent and registering as absent in the first year
According to Section 39 of the Universities Act (558/2009) as amended on 23 March 2015 (256/2015), a first-year student may register as absent in the first year for the following reasons only:
- student is doing national service as stipulated by the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007) or the Act on Voluntary Military Service for Women (194/1995),
- student is on maternity, paternity or parental leave; or
- student has an injury or an illness which prevents the student from starting his/her studies.
Thus, a new student may register as absent at the University of Tampere but he/she must verify the legal reason of the absence given above. Original documents attesting to the lawfulness of the absence should be posted to the University or presented at the Registrar’s Office. The deadline is 7 September 2018 at 2 p.m. (GMT+2).
New international degree students must first contact their Master programme international coordinator before submitting the documents to the University.
If you already have another right to study and have now gotten a new right to study in another degree programme, you may register as absent in the academic year 2018 – 2019 only if you have a lawful reason given above to do so.
If you have a lawful reason to be absent in the spring term only (e.g. your national service or maternity leave will start in January 2019), you may register as absent for the whole academic year. In such a case, you may change your registration as present in the spring term to registration as absent in the spring term if you do it by 11 January 2019.
If you register as absent in the first year but do not submit the necessary documentation, you will lose your right to study. If you lose your right to study and would like to start your studies at a later point, you must apply for the restoration of the right to study. Restoring the right to study does not necessitate new participation in the admission process.
The documents attesting to the lawful reason of being absent are the following:
- If you are doing your national service in Finland as stipulated by the Conscription Act (1438/2007), the Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007) or the Act on Voluntary Military Service for Women (194/1995) or your national service abroad. The document to be submitted:
- your call-up order
- If you are on maternity, paternity or parental leave. The document to be submitted:
- In Finland: Kela’s certificate on the period of receiving the maternity, paternity or parental allowance or, if the student does not have this certificate yet, a medical certificate on the pregnancy
- In other countries: an official document attesting to the student’s statutory right to take maternity, paternity or parental leave
- If you are unable to start your studies because of an illness or an injury. The document to be submitted:
- the decision on the sickness benefit or, if there is no such decision, a medical certificate (the medical certificate must detail the illness or injury you have and that the illness or injury prevents you from starting your studies on 1 August 2018) or a certificate on the obstacles caused by the practical arrangements you need because of an illness or injury (such as a document by the student housing association attesting to the fact that you have been placed in a queue for accommodation with disability access. Your own testimony is not sufficient.)
The original documents must be submitted in Finnish or English. In case you must have your document(s) translated, only an authorised translation is accepted.
Doctoral Programme Admissions
Education not leading to a degree
A written request for rectification regarding a possible error in the study admissions must be submitted no later than 14 days from the announced date of the publication of the admissions results. Any exceptions to this are recorded in the admission criteria of the degree programme. The applicants also receive information regarding the rectification procedure in the degree programme in questions in the admissions results submitted to the applicants.
The request for rectification must be identified and reasons provided. The request should indicate the following:
- Personal and contact information
- The degree programme for which the request for rectification is made
- Specification of which entrance examination question the request for rectification concerns, the contents and reasons for the request

The applicants of a degree programme who have participated in an entrance examination have the right to view their entrance examination papers and points during the aforementioned 14 days at the Admissions Services of the University of Tampere (Main building, Kalevantie 4) on weekdays from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
