Application period is 3.4.-2.5.2018. In the Autumn 2018 the appliation period will be on October. The excact dates will be informed later.

The applicant is required to give detailed information about the following:

  • a draft research proposal for licentiate thesis or doctoral dissertation
  • certificates of academic and educational background or an official transcript of previous university records
  • curriculum vitae
  • Master’s degree certificate translated into English
  • certificates of foreign language skills, if any, e.g. English, German, Finnish
  • descriptions of the syllabus of the applicant's previous studies
  • motivation letter
  • full copy of the Master’s thesis in English or upon agreement in some other language, in which case an English abstract is required.

Certificates of foreign language skills is required.


The quota for the application round is 15 new doctoral students (alltogether 30 students / year).

All the applicants will be informed about the results of the student selection. The selections made in spring 2018 are announced by 20 June, 2018.

You you can accept the study place electronically through the link in your email notification. The confirmation is binding and you cannot change it later. The confirmation must reach the University of Tampere by 11 July, 2018 at 3 pm local time, at the latest. If your confirmation has not arrived by the date indicated above, you will lose your right to enrol in the degree programme. In addition to confirming that you accept the study place, you will have to register as a doctoral student at the University of Tampere.

Please note. One study place per term provision is in effect in this application round.

According to this provision, a student may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland during one academic term. This rule applies to all higher education starting in autumn term 2016 (1 August 2016) and after that.

Higher education degrees included in the provision are:

Bachelor degrees and Master degrees awarded by Finnish universities of applied sciences.
Bachelor degrees and Master degrees awarded by Finnish universities
Licentiate and Doctoral degrees awarded by Finnish universities

Only exceptions to the provision are:

Transfer student selections
The Åland Polytechnic
The Police College of Finland
Higher education institutions outside of Finland

The academic term (from 1 August to 31 December or 1 January to 31 July) is the set framework for implementation. The provision does not prevent acceptance of a place in another degree programme during another academic term. Even if the student postpones the commencement of studies, or interrupts his/her studies, that student cannot accept another study place for a degree programme starting in the same academic term.

An applicant who is dissatisfied with the student admission decision may make a written appeal to the Faculty Council. A signed appeal addressed to the Faculty Council in question must reach the University Registry within 14 days of the official publication of the results. The appeal should include full written details of the reason and grounds for complaint. The postal address is: University Registry (Kirjaamo), FI-33014 University of Tampere, Finland. The request can be sent by mail at the sender's risk. The appeal must be submitted in sufficient time so that it reaches the University Registry by the deadline.


It is a precondition of embarking on postgraduate studies that an applicant should have completed studies with at least a grade of good in the major subject of the postgraduate degree or in a subject to be equated with the major subject, a research plan for approval and a tentative personal study and work plan. Regarding equivalence to the major subject the professor of the major subject will issue a statement. The statement by the professor of the major subject should also make clear what studies will serve to supplement the skills and capabilities required in the major subject when the applicant in some respects does not fulfill the requirements set.

Those eligible for postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Management are

Those who have completed a higher university degree in economic or administrative sciences, social sciences or other appropriate higher university degree. Generally applicants will be required to have grade of at least magna cum laude approbatur /good for the master’s thesis, in addition to which they are required to have achieved at least a grade of good in the subject of the postgraduate degree or in a subject deemed equivalent to the major subjec

Those who have taken foreign degrees

Those who have taken an appropriate foreign master’s degree will be required to demonstrate their research capability with studies in a major subject being of the same standard as a Finnish higher university degree. Such degree should include a thesis comparable to the Finnish master’s thesis with a grade of at least good. The thesis is required to be connected to the major subject of the postgraduate degree and the applicant has the scientific capability required by the major subject of the postgraduate degree.

In the selection of postgraduate students special attention will be paid to the field of the applicant’s proposed research and to the research plan, the major subject and success in studies. Likewise to capabilities for research and the ability of the subject and department concerned to supervise postgraduate research in the subject area of the research.


You must be able to prove your educational background by means of officially authenticated copies of your documents. If the documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, both the authenticated copies of the documents in their original language and an officially confirmed, complete and precise translation into one of the languages mentioned above are required.

In addition to the standard document requirements, educational documents issued in certain countries have more specific requirements for submission. Please go through the requirements carefully and check the countryspecific requirements for your degree awardin country before applying.

If selected, you will have to present your original educational documents upon arrival at the University of Tampere in order to be able to register at the university.
